Plot Synopsis

It's Jim's birthday, yet he is still as bad-tempered as ever. While telling a rude joke, he rises to snide remarks from Tony, causing an awkward shouting match at the dinner table. He quietens down bitterly when his wife, Anthea requests he and Tony don't argue in front of Effy. The family give up on playing a board game as the instructions are difficult to read as they were translated poorly into English from Korean. Effy takes the game upstairs, and using a lighter, melts some of the pieces. Pretending to go to bed, Effy sneaks out of the house to go partying. Tony watches her leave, all dressed up, with fondness while talking on the phone to his former friends, who are now isolating him in favour of Michelle. In a ruse the two planned out, he quickly pretends to be his sister, asleep, when their parents check in on 'her'. Fed up with being all alone in the house and having no friends to go to, Tony goes out into town. In another part of the city, Effy and her overly talkative friend party in a warehouse and Effy flirts with a boy called Spencer and shares an E with him. Effy and Spencer get arrested when the group is arrested by the police, though neither could care less due to their wild attitudes and drug-induced highs. When Tony goes to bail Effy out of jail, he is told she already left. Tony sees Effy getting into a van and chases after her, but is attacked by guys with masks.

Worried about Effy, Tony goes to Chris's and requests to speak to Sid. Sid agrees to help him and they steal Sid's dad's car. Sid keeps imagining he's seeing Cassie around Bristol even though she is supposed to be in a clinic. Effy is taken to a posh club where she meets Josh. He gives her drugs through a needle and she speaks a strange, melancholy monologue before passing out. These happen to be the first words Effy has ever spoken on the show. Tony is told to go to a meeting point by Effy's captors, but on arriving there finds nothing. When Tony finally reveals to Sid what he did to make Michelle break up with Josh, Sid is furious and the two have a brief fist-fight, and Sid reveals that he is upset that a friend he used to look up to has now become such a monster. Sid leaves Tony, and Tony is picked up by someone on a motorbike. Sid meets up with Cassie in a fast food restaurant, and the two kiss. Tony is taken to Josh's club, and rings Michelle. He tells her where he is, and she gets worried. Michelle rings Sid and tells him where Tony is. Sid leaves Cassie and goes to kiss her again, but she refuses, hurt that even when he chooses her over Michelle, she is still ranked under Tony to Sid. Tony goes in to the club and finds Josh and Effy. Josh refuses to allow Tony to call an ambulance until he has sex with Effy. Tony refuses, but begins to cry and beg. Happy simply at reducing Tony to such a low, pathetic state, Josh lets Tony take Effy away. Sid finds them and takes them to the hospital, where it is discovered that Josh had, in fact, given Effy clean pharmaceutical drugs from his mother's clinic.

At the hospital, Jim and Anthea mistakingly assume Tony supplied Effy with the drugs. Sid backs Tony up and takes him away into the corridor. Tony tells Sid that he is finished with being self-centred and wishes to become a better person.
